Hi again! I'm making a new thread instead of adding onto the old one since this is a different topic.
The MM Discord noticed that the way character pages are categorized seems to be very random. Some are organized by first name, some by last name, and some just seem to be in the wrong place in general. To make things a little easier in that category, could we possibly find a way to categorize the character pages in a way that makes sense. I would suggest going by last name but it's ultmately up to you.
Thanks for the question. While delving under-the-hood of the wiki, we are looking into all the categories. Prior to 2011 at the start of this wiki, creating a Character page automatically adds the page name to the category Character - over a 1500 pages ago – which it continues to do today. The DEFAULTSORT tag clarifies the category listing as you've discovered. Cleaning this up is on the Admin to-do list and has been assigned already for 2020 in prep for the new site conversion.
In the meantime, when a new Character page is added the DEFAULTSORT tag is added either by title or last name, unless the Character is only ever referred to by their first name in the episode.
I'm not quite sure I understand the point of having all these different ways to categorize character pages. It's very rare to categorize by first name, much less by title. In my opinion this just makes it even more confusing, having all these different rules, and only makes it more difficult for people to find the character they are looking for.
Even so, there are people who use it as a function of searching. Including one of my friends on Discord. A real life example was of them trying to look for Freddie Pink's page, only for it to be listed under W for Winifred, even though she is hardly ever called that in show. It would've been a whole lot easier for it to just be listed under P for Pink.
And as for the title, like I said, it is very rare for this to be a way of categorizing. Even the default categorizing in my phone doesn't organize people by title, because things just get confusing if you have a million "mr"s or "dr"s. I'm just saying, it's not an ideal way.
Sorry for the confusion. Discord is a website/app with different communities. There is a Murdoch Mysteries group on that site where there are quite a few active MM fans. They are the ones I’ve been conversing with about the quote sections and character categorizing.
Hi -- I'm active on the Murdoch Discord chat, and I'm also a registered editor here who is relatively new to the fandom. I've made a few edits here so far, but I'd like to be a lot more active. I have a ton of experience with writing, editing, coding for the web, and organizing information to be useful. (For example: I worked as a technical writer and editor for ten years, developing and handcoding stuff like an index for a 500-page document that got folded into an existing set of manuals.) I've also written 150,000 words of Murdoch fanfic, if that helps demonstrate how serious I am about the show.
I would like to strongly advocate for organizing the list of characters by last name, not title. Names are unique and far easier to scan for, while many characters may have the same or similar titles.
Agree that the Character category needs cleaning up which is scheduled for the top of 2020 and as we all edit along in 2019 until then. When the pages are examined, the tags are missing entirely or mistyped. Common mistake or omission by contributors of Character pages who do not know about the tag DEFAULTSORT nor the default category of the Character page template.
I understand that Murdoch Mysteries present some challenges to categorizing (i.e. "Jake the Butcher"). We will re-visit this issue again I assure y'all.
Well, everyone is happy to help y'all with the organization of the character pages. MorningMoon is good with coding like she said (trust me lmao) so I'm sure she can help there, but ofc I won't speak FOR her. Point is, we are all willing to help out wherever we can :D
Also, might I recommend for characters whose last names havent been revealed, to just organize by first name to make things easier. Organizing Jack the Butcher by "B" seems rather confusing.
To All MM wiki editors and wanna-be contributors reading this thread! This site has been a quiet and modest wiki generated and edited by the occasional visitor to long-standing MM wiki editors, all fans of Murdoch Mysteries. Two of the best editors have been a student from Europe (learning English) and a retired Vet from the U.S., while the less than stellar contributors have been fan fiction writers and a TVfilm pro – go figure. We welcome young and old, no matter your experience, your primary language or where you live; what matters to this wiki is following the guidelines, practicing a consistent workflow and being in communication. Thanks to all and Happy Holidays!
