"The Lady Vanishes" is the ninth episode of the fifteenth season of Murdoch Mysteries and the two hundred twenty-fourth episode of the series (not including the three stand-alone holiday specials). It first aired on November 15, 2021.

Summary

Murdoch investigates when Higgins goes missing while searching for his kidnapped sister-in-law.

After kidnappers break into Rupert Newsome's house and abduct his wife, Lucinda, in front of the family, a hefty ransom is demanded. Ruth volunteers Higgins, who heads to the drop point but alerts Crabtree that if he doesn't call back in an hour, there's been trouble. When Higgins fails to call, Murdoch's frantic search leads to a warehouse with an ominous message.

Character Revelations

  • Nurse Sullivan hasn't been seen at Toronto Mercy Hospital recently because she now works at The Dispensary.
  • Dr. Julia Ogden is blacklisted by Mercy Hospital.
  • Detective Murdoch does not like Mimico as he has "encountered nothing but foolishness and tragedy there".

Continuity

Historical References

  • This episode takes place in Toronto 1909 – Edward VII (Albert Edward;1841-1910) is King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of the British Dominions beyond the Seas.
  • $100 in 1909 is equivalent to the purchasing power to about $3,039.44 in 2021 (This means that today's prices are 30.39 times higher than average prices since 1909, thus a dollar today only buys 3.29% of what it could buy back then.); By comparison, in the UK £100.00 in 1909 would be equivalent to £12,501.01 in 2021.
  • When the University of Toronto opened its doors to permit women to study medicine in the landmark year 1906, the Ontario Medical College for Women closed, but its clinic called The Dispensary remained opened and continued to prosper in Toronto.

Trivia

  • With a nod to film noir, this episode shares its title with The Lady Vanishes an early classic Alfred Hitchcock thriller from 1938. It was remade in 1979 (an obscure adaptation), then in 2013 for PBS Mystery! series stateside.
  • According to showrunner Peter Mitchell's live tweet: "Came very close to broadcasting this ep in black and white".

Notable Quote

Nurse Sullivan to Dr. Ogden: "Women treating women is the vanguard of modern medicine, Julia."
