"Sweet Amelia" is the twenty-second episode of the fifteenth season of Murdoch Mysteries and the two hundred thirty-seventh episode of the series (not including the three stand-alone holiday specials). It first aired on March 28, 2022.

Summary

When George Crabtree's mentally deranged kidnapper, Amelia, turns herself in, he braces for trouble.

Crabtree is shocked when Amelia Ernst, one of the deranged sisters who abducted him and tortured Effie, voluntarily turns herself in at Station House No. 4. Effie intends to make her face the full force of justice but is hobbled by a clever lawyer.

Murdoch takes leave to spend time with his new baby daughter, Susannah, while Margaret Brackenreid pursues her fugitive son Bobby, without anyone including her husband.

Character Revelations

  • Margaret packs some heat, a determined mother with a gun.
  • Amelia claims Dorothy abandoned her when the truth is even darker.
  • Bobby and his parents meet the late Jimmy Seaton's father.
  • George and Effie get engaged.

Continuity

  • Henry Higgins thinks it unfair that the Detective get time off,..."He didn't have a baby, Doctor Ogden did".
  • No one trusts Amelia nor do they trust her lawyer with good reasons.
  • Armed with Thomas' military pistol, Margaret Brackenreid, is on a mother's quest to find her son.
  • William reads to his baby daughter – Latin terms for daily words-, creates a word card deck, and builds her a mobile/slide player, "...why not equip our child with the tools required so that there will be no limit to what she can accomplish?"

Historical References

  • This episode takes place in Toronto 1910 – George V is King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 6 May 1910 until his death in 1936.
  • Thomas' military pistol from the Boer war.
  • A breach of promise to marry occurs when a person promises to marry another, and then backs out. In law, it is treated like a breach of contract.

Trivia

  • According to showrunner Peter Mitchell's live tweet: "Two young women got their first screen credit on this one. Co-writer Molly Clayton and director Elsbeth McCall".
