Sigmund Freud (1856 to 1939), father of psychoanalysis, was a physiologist, medical doctor, psychologist and influential thinker of the early twentieth century.

Freud's work is often alluded to or made reference to by Julia Ogden as she studied with him abroad (during the offscreen months between season 5 and 6 ), when she was studying to become a psychiatrist.

History

Sigmund Freud visited the United States only once, in 1909, to give five lectures at at Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts. G. Stanley Hall had organized an international conference bringing together 175 of the world's leading psychologists, including Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, and an assortment of educators, physicians, and "the odd political revolutionary" in the person of Emma Goldman. Freud's five lectures were given in German over the course of five days and the honorary degree he received was the only one ever bestowed on the father of psychoanalysis.

In 1909, Freud wrote a summary of his treatment of Little Hans, in a paper entitled "Analysis of a Phobia in a Five-year-old Boy."
