On March 4, 2015, CBC announced Murdoch Mysteries had been renewed for a ninth season before Season 8 had even finished airing. Filming began May 19 and went until November 20. The Canadian premiere date was announced on May 28, 2015 at the CBC Upfront in Toronto. The Alibi release date for Season 9 was in January 2016. Australia aired Season 9 on November 24. The US dates: OvationTV on January 23, 2016 and AcornTV on April 25, 2016.
Additional details about the season and even a clip were also announced at that time.

- Season 9 picks up 5 months after Artful Detective with George Crabtree in Don Jail with Giles.
- Mark Twain, Prime Minister Laurier, and Lucy Maud Montgomery make appearances.
- There is a shocking death that brings great change to the world of Station No. 4 (ep.903).
- Mouna Traore joins the cast as Rebecca James who Julia Ogden (who returns to the City Morgue) takes under her wing. (ep.904).
- John Paul Ruttan plays young Murdoch (ep.907)
- A Merry Murdoch Christmas is the first two-hour original holiday special.
- There is more William-Julia Relationship this season.
- Maureen Jennings writes an episode for this season (ep.915).
Murdoch Mysteries' Season 9 is the highest-rated season yet on CBC as Canada's top-rated homegrown scripted program for the 2015/16 television season.
