Murdoch Mysteries officially renewed on June 1, 2022 by CBC television for Season 16 offering a 24-episodes season again and premieres on CBC in its usual slot in Fall 2022. Season 16 will bring the total episode count up to 263 (not including the three stand-alone holiday specials).
Beginning September 12, 2022, audience favourite Murdoch Mysteries kicked off the Monday night drama lineup of CBC's Fall 2022 season, with the UK release the next day. The U.S. premiere of Season 16 debuted on February 11, 2023 on OvationTV, followed by an AcornTV premiere on March 27, 2023.
Season 16 filming in Toronto started June 2022 and scheduled into Spring 2023. Murdoch Mysteries originally premiered on Citytv in 2008, based on characters from the Detective Murdoch novels by Maureen Jennings, with the original principle cast lead by Yannick Bisson as William Murdoch, Hélène Joy as Dr. Julia Ogden, Thomas Craig as Inspector Thomas Brackenreid and Jonny Harris as Constables George Crabtree. Season 16 will include regulars Arwen Humphreys as Margaret Brackenreid, Lachlan Murdoch as Henry Higgins, Daniel Maslany as Detective Llewellyn Watts, and Shanice Banton as Chief Coroner Violet Hart, along with the usual of recurring guest cast favorites.
Murdoch Mysteries is executive produced by Christina Jennings, Scott Garvie, Yannick Bisson, Hélène Joy, and Peter Mitchell, who also serves as showrunner. Stephen Montgomery and Julie Lacey are its producers.
October 13, 2022, Shaftesbury announced a new spin-off that features Detective William Murdoch’s time-travelling great-great-great-granddaughter sixteen-year-old Macy who is a forensic wunderkind. The production is now underway on Macy Murdoch (8x11), currently shooting in Toronto and will debut on CBC Gem in spring 2023. “We’re incredibly proud to bring this series to CBC Kids,” says Jennifer McCann, Executive Producer and Vice President of Kids & Family. "Our talented cast of fresh faces, brilliant showrunners, writers, director and crew have created an exciting series that will make for a great co-viewing experience." Shanice Banton (Mrs. Violet Hart) and Lachlan Murdoch (Constable Henry Higgins-Newsome) from the beloved CBC series will appear in the new series as guides to help the young detective.
Season 16 Events and other tidbits:
The Municipality of Port Hope has given production crews with Shaftesbury Murdoch XVI Inc. permission for filming along John Street on Tuesday, July 5. The municipality has also approved the production company reserving John Street parking on Thursday, June 30, and July 4 to 6, during these times, the parking spots will be occupied with “set dressings and vehicles".
The Scottish Rite in Hamilton will make an appearance — again; They also filmed at the Queen Street South landmark.
Just before Season 16 premiered on September 12, MM cast and crew were filming in Brantford, city seat (1852) of Brant county, southeastern Ontario, Canada, from Friday, September 2 through Thursday, September 8, filming on the track and field enclosure at the Steve Brown Sports Complex on Edge Street.
During the first week of the Murdoch Mysteries Transcendent Travel tour in October 2022, several tidbits were released to fans on the tour, including two titles of future episodes: Dash to Death written by Caleigh Bacchus that will involve running and feature a guest appearance by Canadian Olympian Andre De Grasse, and Vengeance Makes the Man, written by Andrea Scott.
On November 2, 2022, Murdoch Mysteries was back in Niagara for filming. Assistant location manager Anastasia Reeve stated the show crew required a day to set up Tuesday to film about three scenes Wednesday (at a military barrack, complete with cannon fire. There was intermittent traffic stops on Lakeshore Road supervised by Niagara Parks Police) and on Thursday more scenes were shot, at Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Grand Victorian hotel on Niagara Parkway. This week’s filming will be for the 15th episode of Season 16.
Murdoch Mysteries: The Experience - Friday November 11th at the Center in the Square, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony performs Murdoch Mysteries: In Concert with the entire cast on the big screen accompanied by Robert Carli’s score performed live by the KWS in sync to Murdoch Ahoy, one of the most beloved and musically rich episodes of the series.
Saturday and Sunday, November 12 and 13, at THEMUSEUM presents Breakfast with Murdoch Mysteries: A Morning Panel+Q&A Sessions.
Murdoch Mysteries: The Exhibition, at THEMUSEUM, step behind the camera and immerse yourself in the fascinating history, science, and fashion of the series – which has also taped episodes in various locations throughout Waterloo Region – through February 2023.
CBC announces Winter 2023: Season 16 continues on January 2 in its usual time slot Mondays at 8PM.
The cast and crew of Murdoch Mysteries returned to Brantford, Kitchener, on January 9 - 13, 2023. Filming for Season 16 concluded February 2023.

ACTRA Toronto announced Murdoch Mysteries as a nominee for the Members’ Choice Series Ensemble Award and the winner was announced at the 21st annual ACTRA Awards in Toronto on April 26, 2023.
On March 11, 2023, Murder in F Major episode had an exclusive screening at Roy Thomson Hall, featuring special guests from the series there in person.
On June 16, 2023, Canada’s longest-running hour-long drama meets Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Lucas Waldin, hosted by composer Robert Carli and Thomas Craig, giving an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the music that has helped make CBC’s Murdoch Mysteries so beloved around the world.
