Rough and Tumble, also known as Rough and Rowdy Way (US), is the second episode of the fourteenth season of the Murdoch Mysteries and the two hundred sixth episode of the series (not including the three stand-alone holiday specials). It first aired January 11, 2021.

Summary

Inspector Brackenreid learns his son is accused of murder and refuses Murdoch's help with the case.

After Inspector Arthur Dreadnaught of the Hamilton Constabulary informs him that his son Bobby drunkenly beat a classmate to death, Thomas Brackenreid goes silent refusing help from Murdoch. Curious, Murdoch dispatches Watts to Hamilton who returns with a wanted poster of Robert Brackenreid – now a fugitive. As far as Dreadnaught and the Hamilton Constabulary are concerned, Brackenreid's son is a wanted and dangerous man. When Crabtree asks what they are supposed to do now, Murdoch's only response is help him.

Character Revelations

Continuity

  • George and Murdoch continue sharing their thoughts on accomplished women and their relationships with them...
  • Crabtree's craziest theories have often been proven right.
  • When it comes to Goldie Huckabee, Julia and Murdoch are a bit suspicious, if not paranoid.
  • The Hot Dog Stand makes an appearance.

Historical References

  • This episode takes place in Toronto 1908 – Edward VII (Albert Edward;1841-1910) is King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of the British Dominions beyond the Seas.
  • Occam's razor is the principle that, of two explanations that account for all the facts, the simpler one is more likely to be correct. It is applied to a wide range of disciplines, including religion, physics, and medicine.

Trivia

  • This episode includes flashbacks to (ep.810), (ep.812) and (ep.702) with Jayden Greig as Bobby Brackenreid.
  • Scott's Diner offers outdoor dining and take-out (a nod to Covid restrictions) according to director Yannick Bisson.
  • Filmed exterior scenes on the grounds of the Glenhyrst, Brantford, ON.
  • According to showrunner Peter Mitchell, the Writers Room has joked about turning Bobby into a serial killer, "...seeing all the videos this summer of how demonstrations and the like could turn into random violence also tweaked the idea. And the release of Bob Dylan’s album "Rough and Rowdy Ways" kind of lit the flame." He is also a fan of the “annoying neighbour trope”.
  • Filming intimate scenes in the time of COVID is difficult at best, so the "...decision to have more light-hearted scenes with William and Julia came about because, well have you looked at the world out there, we felt we could use a little of it right now...we wanted to show that the two do love each other and if one way to do that was to see them laugh together more."
