Appearances and Mentions

The Prince and the Rebel

  • Prince Alfred visited Toronto in 1895 and his schedule included events like listening to a children's choir and dedicating a library. While in Toronto, security for the Prince was overseen by Detective William Murdoch and Constable George Crabtree. When Murdoch was called away to investigate the murder of Maggie Gilpatrick, the Prince appointed Crabtree his "Senior Security Officer."
  • While in Toronto, Prince Alfred was targeted by the Irish Republican Brotherhood. When Inspector Thomas Brackenreid and Murdoch warned the Prince of the danger, Alfred stubbornly refused to flee back to England, stating that his grandmother survived five attempts on her life. After a bombing of the Prince's carriage, in which the body of John Tucker was found, the Constabulary worried that other Brotherhood members may be plotting. Therefore, Constable Henry Higgins was cast to pose as the Prince. However, Alfred and Murdoch were kidnapped by David Jennings, his valet, who was revealed to be in league with the Brotherhood. They intended to hold him until Ireland was freed from British rule. However, the Toronto Constabulary tracked them down and surrounded their hideout. Like a cornered animal, Jennings prepared to burn down the farm to kill the Prince and Murdoch. Thankfully, both their lives were saved by Eddie Cullen, one of the kidnappers who had a change of heart.
  • The Prince had a reputation for womanizing and drinking. He asked Crabtree to find him a bottle of rum and "girls." Crabtree obliged by bringing several dancing girls to the Queen's Hotel.

  • History does not record that Prince Alfred ever actually visited Canada.
  • The historical Alfred died at age 24 in 1899.
