- Effie asks George to help Mr. Vickers when his rent goes missing as he has nowhere else to turn.
- Mr. Vickers deposited his rent packet into the lockbox three days ago, but the superintendent never got the money. Mr. Vickers maintains it must have been stolen.
- Crabtree and Watts visit Mr. Vickers to discover that he not only bakes brownies but snickerdoodles too - to Watt's delight.
- Mr. Vickers explains, bringing out his bank book, he took thirty dollars out of the bank on the day the rent was due, then wrapped the money and wrote his name on the packet so Mr. Kerr would know whose account to credit. It was right after dinner, around 8 o'clock that evening, he put the packet in the lockbox. Then adds, "I don't want to move house, gentlemen. Most places to let don't have an oven with a thermostat," offering more snickerdoodles to Watts who assures him that "We wouldn't want you to lose your oven."
- Both Crabtree and Watts know that the building doors are locked after 7 o'clock. After that, only tenants with keys can get inside. So their thief lives in the building.
