Mark Twain is the pen name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910) who was an adventurer and wily intellectual. Mark Twain wrote the classic American novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Biography

He grew up in Hannibal, Missouri which inspired several of Mark Twain's fictional locales. He was also a riverboat pilot, journalist, lecturer, entrepreneur and inventor.

Mark Twain arrives in Toronto to speak at the Empire Club at the invitation of Clarence Eldrich, criticizing the monarchy with his anti-Imperial stance, which greatly offended the club members. This brings great chaos as someone tries to shoot him. He is bewildered at this attempt on his life. He confides in Murdoch about his money troubles and how he is trying to make up for his misdeeds to his ailing wife, Olivia. Nearly bankrupt, the speaking circuit is his only source of income. Touched by his story, Dr. Ogden proposes she hires him to give a series of talks at the Dominion Women's Enfranchisement Association. Murdoch and Brackenreid are less than pleased. Brackenreid, hoping to get membership in the Empire Club if he got Twain to leave Toronto, attempted to convince him to do so. However, Twain convinces him that he deserves no master. Twain speaks honestly about how he once believed that women had no place in the vote, until he met his wife. The police monitors his speech, but unfortunately someone kills his assistant, Benson. It is later revealed that Benson was the real target, as he was sleeping with Clarence's wife, who only invited him to act as a red herring.

Mark Twain encourages George to keep writing and tells him, "Take it from me, son. Reality can be beaten with enough imagination." He assures Murdoch, "I will give Nikola (Tesla) your best the next time I see him."
