Summary

- This episode takes place in Toronto 1911 – George V is King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 6 May 1910 until his death in 1936.
- In May 1796, English physician Edward Jenner (1749–1823) created the world's first successful vaccine.
- The first reported case of polio in Canada was in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1910, when a young girl became ill with the disease and died while in hospital. The virus soon spread to other Ontario communities, including Toronto, Windsor, and Niagara Falls.
- Polio is the short name for poliomyelitis, a highly infectious disease caused by the poliovirus. Because no cure for polio exists, the focus is on increasing comfort, speeding recovery, and preventing complications. In the 1950s, Dr. Jonas Salk will create the first polio vaccine which helps the body create antibodies and protects one from getting polio if exposed to the virus.
