The Long Arm of Villainy is the third episode of Murdoch Mysteries: The Curse of the Lost Pharaohs.

Summary[]

As the mummy swings its blade, it is only the timely return of the inspector that saves Murdoch and Crabtree. However, once Brackenreid gets the upper hand, the mummy suddenly dies.

Crabtree wipes his bloody lip and comments on Brackenreid's impeccable timing. He mentions he had just knocked out the "Cabbagetown Colossus," when he had a strange premonition of danger.

Brackenreid asks if this is the murderer and the case is over. Murdoch pulls back the mummy's cloth to reveal...the face of a young man.

Murdoch comments it's as they thought, that there was nothing supernatural at all about the murders. However, William is intrigued by the mysterious scarab amulet the "mummy" had been wearing. He quickly finds a needle sticking out of the back of the amulet...the cause of death for the young man. He deduces it was activated remotely through wireless telegraphy, from somewhere nearby.

George then mentions that means the young man isn't the "Sekhmet" they're searching for, to which Murdoch agrees.

During Julia's autopsy, she discovers scar tissue that indicates ritualistic self-flagellation, to which Murdoch connects to an ancient cult. This happened as a tribute to their gods.

The four are gathered in the morgue while Crabtree explodes at the sheer fact the "mummy" wore dirty boots. Murdoch asks Julia for his magnifying glass, which she proffers, and quickly identifies the dirt as a mixture of sand, clay, and mud only found at Niagara Falls. Brackenreid explains it is a 2-day journey, but Julia quickly responds they can be there that afternoon. Crabtree is astonished, and Julia exclaims, "Have none of you met Clarissa?"

Due to Julia's wealth, she owns a ship that takes them on their journey, through abysmal weather. Unfortunately, the group realizes as they approach the mouth of Niagara Falls another boat is following them. Crabtree darkly comments on its undoubtedly nefarious intentions for the gang.

Trivia[]

  • The men are threatened by the mysterious mummy, but he's killed by an accomplice before he can be questioned.
