Marie Curie is a Polish-born French physicist, famous for her work on radioactivity, introduced in Season 13 of Murdoch Mysteries, portrayed by Ewa Placzynska.

History

Marie Curie, née Maria Sklodowska, was born in Warsaw, Congress Kingdom of Poland, Russian Empire on November 7, 1867. Curie was the youngest of five children.

With Henri Becquerel and her husband, Pierre Curie, she was awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize for Physics. Marie Curie became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the first person — man or woman — to win the award twice. She is the only woman to win the award in two different fields.

With her husband Pierre Curie, Marie's efforts led to the discovery of polonium and radium and, after Pierre's death, the further development of X-rays. The famed scientist died in 1934 of aplastic anemia likely caused by exposure to radiation.
