Summary
Reeling from a personal revelation, Murdoch seeks to avenge the murder of Anna Fulford.
Murdoch realizes that the boy who shot at the Blackhand crime boss is his son. Julia is stunned but eager to accept the boy out of love for William.
Elsewhere, love takes a beating as Crabtree's proposal to Effie is dashed, Watts braces for Jack's marriage, and Higgins and Ruth remain separated. Family is the one thing holding Brackenreid together as he resists pressure to resign from his job.
Character Revelations
- Henry and Ruth welcomed a daughter, with a little help from Margaret and Julia...
- In a rare moment, Julia confides in Margaret as she copes with William having another love in his life – the son that they are unable to have together; The two very different women share a similar familial situation.
- Amelia and Dorothy are twin sisters: Dorothy is the truly evil one, whereas Amelia just wants to marry George because she loves him and Dorothy is trying to facilitate that.
Continuity
- Julia recalls (via flashbacks) her joy and sorrow trying to have a child with William...
- Station House No. 4 stands by their Inspector...
Historical References
- This episode takes place in Toronto 1908 – Edward VII (Albert Edward;1841-1910) is King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of the British Dominions beyond the Seas.
Trivia
- Showrunner Peter Mitchell states, "There is an awareness of what the fans are thinking and if some fan is actually thinking exactly what we were going to do, we change it if we have time. We still write for that four-quadrant group of fans who want the mystery, the ones who want the romance, the ones who want science and the ones who want Victoriana … or Edwardiana now." He reveals, "I always knew, from the minute I saw Sarah Swire appear on the show as Amelia Ernst that she was going to be in the finale...I knew that we would have to circle back around on Bobby, and the twisted little relationship between Violet and Arthur we were pretty sure on very early. The Murdoch storyline may have come last. Once we realized we were going to do that, there was no way the physical Anna (Lisa Faulkner) would be in Canada (not to mention COVID restrictions), so we went with the memory of Anna. And, as you can tell, that story is far from resolved."
- On Hélène Joy's performance, director Peter Mitchell adds, "Hélène dialed into that stuff and, as an actress, is aware of overplaying that stuff and doesn’t. She kills in the small moments and I really didn’t have to talk too much to her about it. You have to have guts to portray insecurities and she did a really good job."
- Anna Fulford has yet to reappear and is only mentioned thus far.
Notable Quotes
- Julia to Margaret: "No, they are. He had a child with another woman before we married. Exactly the same."
- William to Julia: "Julia, I love you just as I always have."
Error
- While “between you and I" was said in the 19th century by most well-educated Edwardians and some writers would have been taught it (even into the late 20th), this is not the first time this grammar error has been pointed out by Murdochians – when to say I and when to say me: It’s between you and me, about him and me, with her and me, and from you and me.
