“Diamonds in the Sand” is the second episode of the nineteenth season of Murdoch Mysteries and the three hundred eleventh episode not including the three stand-alone holiday specials of the series. It aired on October 13, 2025.

Summary

Inspector Choi is taken hostage in a roadside inn while transporting a criminal back to Toronto. The Crabtrees must make a difficult decision about their future when George gets a job offer.

Character Revelations

• George receives a letter from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.
• Effie confides in Watts: she doesn't want children but George wants a family of his own.
• After signing his resignation paper, Crabtree gets his final pay check from Chief Constable Brackenreid who gives him some advice.
• George Crabtree leaves for his home to become assistant police chief in Newfoundland.

Continuity

• Transporting a criminal runs afoul, again. (See ep.709, ep.1211, ep.1724)
• Murdoch experiments with cellophane, as does Watts who finds a possible commercial use.

Historical References

• This episode takes place in Toronto 1913 – George V is King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 6 May 1910 until his death in 1936.
• Cellophane was invented in 1908 by Swiss chemist Jacques Brandenberger (1872 – 1954), who was trying to create a waterproof coating for fabric.

• In 1913, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) was known as the Newfoundland Constabulary, with John Sullivan as its first Newfoundlander police chief, a position he assumed in 1908.
