"Convalescence" is the ninth episode of the second season of the Murdoch Mysteries and the twenty-second episode of the series. It first aired on March 31, 2009.

After chasing a suspect, Detective Murdoch has a serious fall and finds himself bedridden with several broken bones and a nasty gash on his arm. He's cared for by a concerned Dr. Julia Ogden who has him on his way to recovery but leaves when an equally concerned Enid Jones arrives. After Murdoch's landlady goes away suddenly to care for her sick sister, the bedridden Murdoch is left with a replacement landlady and begins hearing strange noises in the house but can't quite locate them or who might be making the noise. When he becomes feverish and his condition deteriorates, Enid seeks out Julia's help. In the end, the night vision goggles he's been building prove to be quite useful. While Murdoch is recuperating, Constable Crabtree takes over as acting detective and continues to investigate the murder. He manages to locate the murder site easily but finds that the only witness may be a talking parrot.

Character Revelations

  • Murdoch has been working on Night Vision Goggles which comes in handy.
  • Higgins reveals that he speaks French because his mother is from the Gaspé in Québec, which proves to be handy in the investigation.
  • Brackenreid does not really like the French that much.

  • William and Julia begin to move closer again, as she treats his wound and its infection.
  • William dreams about Julia and reveals to her his heart's desire, although later Enid and Alwyn appear too.
  • Although Brackenreid assumes there are no French restaurants in Toronto, Crabtree and Higgins discover three La Bonne Nuit at 29 Wilton Street, Chez Pierre at 99 Albert, and a third Le Petit whose address is not disclosed as Brackenreid interrupts Higgins.
