"Code M for Murdoch" is the third episode of fourteenth season of the Murdoch Mysteries and the two hundred seventh episode of the series (not including the three stand-alone holiday specials). It first aired January 18, 2021.
Summary
Murdoch learns from Terence Meyers that James Pendrick has been abducted and the inventor's life is in danger. The team soon finds themselves in a dangerous situation.
Terrence Meyers awakes Murdoch and Ogden to deliver an intercepted telegraph that appears to be from James Pendrick. Later at the Station House, Pendrick's assistant confirms she hasn't seen him for weeks. The information shifts Murdoch into invention overdrive, while Brackenreid, Higgins, and Watts search the wharf. Then, Dr. Ogden connects a badly beaten man pulled from the river to a colleague of hers at university.
Character Revelations
- James Pendrick and Svetlana Tsiolkovsky have parted ways...
Continuity
- Once again, Constable Higgins falls asleep on the job (ref. ep.1207).
Historical References
- This episode takes place in Toronto 1908 – Edward VII (Albert Edward;1841-1910) is King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of the British Dominions beyond the Seas.
- Louis Pasteur developed the earliest effective vaccine against rabies that was first used to treat a human bite victim on 6 July 1885.
Trivia
- This episode includes flashbacks to (ep.506) in which George Crabtree makes only a flashback cameo appearance as does Sally Pendrick (ep.306) in this episode.
- According to Peter Mitchell, "...Stebbings and Matthew beat each other up since Cold Squad".
- According to Paul Aitken, "When we were starting Season 2, we had a phone conversation with the network (Citytv at that time). They told us they loved the show and joked that they wanted it on for 15 seasons. We laughed. They laughed. And here we are." Like a Beatles album has a Ringo song, it is an ingrained habit to have Terrence Meyers every season. "...a Terrence Meyers plague story we had knocking around for a few years" melds with a dream Aitken had about Murdoch getting a message saying “Murdoch find JP”. Thus, the rabies sub-plot was not inspired by the COVID pandemic. Though, we can thank COVID for the guest cast's availability.
Error
- The hertz, the derived unit of frequency defined as one cycle per second, is named after the German physicist Heinrich Hertz (1857–1894) and the name was established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in 1935. In 1960, the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) adopted it, officially replacing the previous name for the unit, cycles per second (cps).
