"Close Encounters" is the twenty-fourth episode of the fifteenth season of Murdoch Mysteries and the two hundred thirty-ninth episode of the series (not including the three stand-alone holiday specials). It first aired on April 11, 2022.

Summary

Season Finale: With his family in hiding, Murdoch tries to discover who is behind attempts on their lives. Meanwhile, Effie gives George an unusual wedding gift which nearly backfires and uncovers a dead body.

After finding a bomb at their home, Murdoch secures Julia and baby Susannah at a seedy hotel with a panic button while he pursues the threat while both Brackenreid and Hart are being blackmailed by her nefarious father who is found dead.

Meanwhile Crabtree is hunting the otherworldly beings who seem to have abducted Effie's maid of honor, to the glee of his future father-in-law and disdain of his mother-in-law to be.

  • This episode's Story is by Paul Aitken, Simon McNabb, Noelle Girard, Christina Ray, Caleigh Bacchus.
  • The episode title is a nod to the 1977 American science fiction film Encounters of the Third Kind, including a scene with a plate of mashed potatoes - a much parodied "sculpture" scene and satirized movie since it's first release.
  • Showrunner Peter Mitchell live tweeted: "Went old school cliffhanger with this one complete with freeze frame".
