Sir Clifford Sifton (1861-1929), PC, KCMG, KC, lawyer, politician, businessman is introduced in Season 13 of Murdoch Mysteries, portrayed by Brad Austin.
History[]
One of the ablest politicians of his time, Clifford Sifton is best known for his aggressive promotion of immigration to settle the Prairie West – immigration to Canada increased significantly to 141,465 by 1905 under his leadership, having little interest in the Indigenous inhabitants of that area.
A Liberal politician of considerable influence and vision, he was also a controversial figure. Sifton resigned from Cabinet on 27 February 1905, following a dispute with Prime Minister Laurier over school policy for Alberta and Saskatchewan. He was chairman of the Canadian Commission of Conservation from 1909 to 1918.
