From Africville, Halifax, Miss Cassiopeia Bright is a hard working woman with a university education who has failed at owning two business, but she is determined to succeed.

- Miss Cassiopeia Bright visits the City Morgue to introduce herself to the Chief City Coroner and to confirm that Mrs. Hart is in charge and asks her, "How did you get where you are?" Clearly, Violet Hart is like herself and yet has achieved so much more and Cassiopeia knows from her own experience that hard work alone does not guarantee such success. Mrs. Hart is disinclined to be of any help.
- Cassiopeia Bright remains persistent in her goal to be as successful as her reluctant mentor, but she soon comes across the news magazine article that reveals the secret of Violet Hart's success is through her marriage to a wealthy white man. The righteous and forthright Miss Bright realizes that "it was nothing but a fool's errand", with her parting words to the mentor, "It makes me wonder what other secrets you hold", she leaves the morgue.
