Summary
Violet Hart investigates when a protester dies at an event for Black people's rights.
Violet Hart attends an event in Niagara featuring American civil rights leaders W. E. B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington. When racist protesters greet their supporters, the speakers remain unflappable; But when the protest leader is found murdered, the local constabulary is rude and dismissive of Mrs. Hart's assessment. Fearing for the integrity of the investigation, she begins her own.

- Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) was an American educator and author. In 1901 then president Theodore Roosevelt asked him to dine at that the White House.
- W.E.B. Du Bois (1868-1963) a scholar at the historically Black Atlanta University, established himself as a leading thinker on race and the plight of Black Americans. In 1906, he met with other civil rights leaders in Canada to write a declaration opposing the Atlanta Compromise.
