- Barrister is a lawyer who has studied the bar course, undertaken their readership with a senior Barrister and passed the 'Bar' examination. A barrister is a litigator, i.e. a courtroom lawyer.
In Britain, Barristers are called by the Solicitors who contracted them to give legal advice in the particular area in which they are specialist when the case is brought to Courts. A Lawyer is someone admitted to the broader legal profession including being a Barrister, Solicitor or Judge. A Solicitor is someone with a certificate to practice law that is not a Barrister or Judge.
The Canadian and U.S. legal system does not make a distinction between Solicitor and Barristers – they name both as “Lawyers”.
