Historical References
- This episode takes place in Toronto 1911 – George V is King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 6 May 1910 until his death in 1936.
- It's said the Highland Games originate from Ireland in 2000 BC and that they crossed the water to Scotland with the fourth and fifth century migrations of the Scotti into Dalriada (Argyll) and beyond. The Games are also noted for their unique sporting and athletic events many of which involve throwing and lifting. These include the shot put, tug-o-war, caber toss and hammer throw - collectively known as "heavy events", thus the name of this episode.
- According to tradition, the old kings and clan chiefs used the Highland Games as a means to select their best men at arms, as the discipline required to perform the Highland dances allowed men to demonstrate their strength, stamina and agility. Perhaps nothing captures the spirit of Scottish culture better than the sight of Highland dancing being performed at some Highland gathering in some far flung corner of the world.
Trivia
- The MM production team gives a special thanks to the Sim School of Highland Dance for their support with this episode, featuring highland dance numbers choreographed by Embro's very own Sherry Sim. Embro, Ontario is a small community located in the southwestern part of the province.
